Flooding is currently the most common type of natural disaster globally. In 2014 Florida had more flood insurance claims than any other state in the country. Flooding is one of Florida’s most frequent hazards. It’s a coast to coast threat that can happen any time of the year. Contrary to popular belief everyone lives in a potential flood zone, which makes flood insurance a smart investment for everyone.

Is flood insurance important for people who live in low-risk areas?

If you own a home, flood insurance is very important. A report by the National Flood Insurance Program states that at least 20% of there claims comes from people who live in moderate to low risk areas. As we said before everyone lives in a potential flood zone, so homeowners living in low-risk areas can still be victims of flood damage.

If I have a homeowners policy do I need flood insurance?

Standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover damages caused by flooding. This means that just having homeowners insurance will not protect you from flooding. While homeowners insurance does offer protection from other forms of water damage, there is no safer way to protect your home from flooding other than flood insurance.
